As part of my posts, I'm going to talk about why I choose certain pieces and the memories they invoke. It seems fitting that I start this off with Wednesday Addams on this Wednesday Wednesday, as a reminder my oldest school friend.
In 1991 'The Addams Family' was released, and it was also the year I met my first best friend, Jess. She moved to Sydney from the UK and started at my prep school part way through the year. I was assigned to help look after her on her first day, and we've been buddies ever since. We were the sort of buddies that were invited to each other's siblings birthday parties, and are still lucky to be in touch 30 years later.
We spent many a weekened at each other's houses, planning visits around Lois and Clarke, the new Adventures of Superman or begging our parents to let us rent either The Addams Family or Addams Family Values from the video store for the umpteenth time. Oh, and we were obsessed with Wednesday - constantly doing our best impressions. As two little brunette girls, we saw something of ourselves in her, our love of braids, and I guess the fact that she wasn't trying to be anyone but herself, with the exception of the time she was forced to watch Disney movies, and managed to smile... but she well and truly made up for that!
Several years after we'd moved on to separate schools, I remember we went to one of our sibling's spooky themed birthday party together, and of course, we both went as Wednesday. The photo was hilarious, complete with the fake cobwebs I had to cover up the flowers on my otherwise black dress.
It's funny how such small things invoke memories. Aside from my beloved Australiana, I usually wont choose a brooch unless it represents something about me, and this Wednesday brooch reminds me of growing up with Jess, and all the adventures we had together.
I find it funny that I identified with such a dark character as a kid, but I really don't remember seeing Wednesday as dark and weird, I remember thinking how cool she was. It may have taken the better part of my 30+ years to figure it out, but there's nothing wrong with being different, so long as you know who you are. Something Wednesday taught me.
