I've always loved birds. My first word was "bird", and my favourite primary school teacher was Mrs. Bird. But aside from those coincidental facts, I've always loved them.
Growing up on the North Shore of Sydney, literally amongst the trees, it was pretty common to be visited by rainbow lorikeets, crimson rosellas, cockatoos, king parrots, kookaburras, and plenty of others. I always loved hearing the kookaburras in the morning, and the sound of all the birds chattering is one of the things I miss most about living in Australia. I absolutely love hearing the birds here, but there's something pretty special about Australian native birds.
When I started my little style adventure and decided to add my daily dose of Australiana, birds were always going to feature heavily, but I couldn't have predicted how heavily. Rarely an outfit goes by where I'm not wearing some form of Aussie bird, truthfully, and if there's no birds, there's usually an Aussie floral emblem of some kind, but that's a story for another post!
Over the past year I've discovered many wonderful artists and makers who hand craft beautiful pieces of art featuring all kinds of Aussie Avifauna, which has meant discovering some wonderful birds that I wasn't even familiar with. In particular, my favouite purveyors of parrots have included Molly Coombs Marr, Lunar Deesigns, Smyle Designs, and of course, the inspiration for the name of this post, Pete Cromer. For Pete's recent collaboration with Erstwilder, he was walking through the designs with the lovely Erstwilder team and mentioned that he's always been a "Bird Boy", and that stuck with me.
I've always been a "Bird Bird". Aside from actual birds, I love planes, which of course remind me of birds gliding through the air. Whenever I'm asked what my super power would be, it's always been the power of flight. I absolutely adore seeing them outside my window, and get to experience a whole other variety of birds native to North America, including Cardinals, Blue Jays, Chicakdees etc. And don't even get me started on their songs. It's no wonder I've always loved flying and music I guess, growing up loving birds!
So as I continue to make my way through this journey of anxiety and depression, exacerbated by various covid related restrictions, one thing has perpetually brought my joy are birds. Birds on my clothing, bird accessories, and birds outside my window. I always wonder where they're going, where they've come from, and what they've seen along the way. Well and truly, a bird bird.
Note: it's come to my attention that the term "bird" is not widely used as a term for a female up here in the Great White North... so that what's I mean by a "bird bird"! 😆
I’m literally listening to birds chirping as I read this 😍
